Home Remedies for a Toothache
What is a Toothache?
A toothache is a pain or discomfort in or around a tooth. It’s usually caused by dental problems, such as an infection, an abscess, a cavity, or a broken tooth. Toothaches can range from mild to excruciating, and can be difficult to treat.
Home Remedies for a Toothache
There are several home remedies that you can try to ease the discomfort of a toothache. Here are some of the most common ones:
Saltwater Rinse
A saltwater rinse is a simple and inexpensive home remedy for a toothache. To make a saltwater rinse, mix a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Swish the saltwater around in your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit it out. This can help to reduce inflammation and can help to draw out any infection.
Garlic
Garlic is a natural antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. To use garlic for a toothache, crush a clove of garlic and mix it with some olive oil. Use a cotton swab to apply the mixture to the affected tooth and gum. Leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse your mouth with warm water.
Clove Oil
Clove oil has natural antiseptic and pain-relieving properties. To use it for a toothache, soak a cotton ball in clove oil and apply it directly to the affected tooth. Leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse your mouth with warm water. Do not swallow the clove oil.
Tea Bags
A cold tea bag can be used to help reduce the pain from a toothache. To use it, dampen a black tea bag and place it on the affected tooth. The tannins in the tea can help to reduce inflammation and can help to numb the pain.
Cold Compress
Applying a cold compress to the affected area can help to reduce pain and swelling. To make a cold compress, wrap some ice in a towel and apply it to the area for 15 minutes, then remove it for 15 minutes. Repeat this process several times a day.
Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers
Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help to reduce the pain of a toothache. Follow the instructions on the package for proper dosage.
When to See a Doctor
If home remedies do not work, or if the pain is severe, you should see a dentist as soon as possible. They can diagnose the cause of the toothache and provide treatment to help relieve the pain.
